Synesthesia is the production of a sense impression relating to one sense or part of the body by stimulation of another sense or part of the body. The most common form of synesthesia is colored hearing: sounds, music or voices seen as colors. This colored hearing creates a vastly different experience when listening to music. Tempos are geometric shapes with distinct spacing and orientation along an axis, a singer’s lilt expresses as a curving line that ebbs and flows with their cadence, and each verse has its corresponding shape and color that is unique to each song. My synesthetic experience with music has overall been heightened by my access to the sphere of graphic design. Layer opacities, distortions, and clipping masks allow my brain to process what I hear and see, creating an expressive representation of my singular experience with music. Visually, posters may be discordant with composition ideals, but they are a physical manifestation of how my brain listens to the world. Perhaps when listening to the songs that each poster is named after, you may hear the same thing that I see.
