“The Haenyeo’s Bounty” is a colorful character illustration project for Art 273 at Cal Poly Humboldt during the Fall 2023 semester. The project was to create an original character concept illustration in color using acrylic gouache and ink. The character depicted is a haenyeo (해녀), a traditional Korean woman diver of Jeju Island who dives to deep levels in the ocean to hunt and gather without using an oxygen tank. Inspiration for the Haenyeo character came from portrait photography by Hyung S. Kim and Korean folklore about mermaids. The result is a typical-looking Korean woman diver with a little bit “extra” in her appearance, such as the scaling of her wetsuit and her treasured finds around her waist. It makes you wonder if she is just a woman or if she is something more than that.
